Lesson 2 — Spirit, Soul, and Body: What Are They?

(Certificate-Level Bible School Course — Module 1)

MODULE 1 — Understanding the Human Person

LESSON 2 — Spirit, Soul, and Body: What Are They?

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the student should be able to:

  1. Define spirit, soul, and body from a biblical standpoint.
  2. Understand the difference between the three.
  3. Explain how each part functions in human life.
  4. Describe what happens to each part at death.

1️⃣ Man Is a Three-Part Being

According to Scripture, humans are made of spirit, soul, and body.

“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless…” — 1 Thessalonians 5:23

This is the clearest biblical proof that mankind is tri-part.

2️⃣ The Body (Physical Part of Man)

Definition:

The body is the physical, natural dwelling place for the soul and spirit.

Functions:

  • Gives man authority to live legally on earth
  • Allows interaction with the physical world
  • Contains the five senses

At Death:

The body returns to dust (Genesis 3:19) and awaits resurrection.

3️⃣ The Soul (Mind, Will, Emotions)

Definition:

The soul is the self, the seat of:

  • Thoughts
  • Feelings
  • Desires
  • Decisions
  • Personality

Key Scriptures:

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me…” — Psalm 103:1
“He restores my soul…” — Psalm 23:3

At Death:

The soul remains conscious (Luke 16:23) and goes either to:

  • Paradise / Heaven (believers)
  • Hades (unbelievers)

4️⃣ The Spirit (God-Conscious Part of Man)

Definition:

The spirit is the part of man that connects with God.

Functions:

  • Fellowship with God (John 4:24)
  • Intuition / spiritual understanding
  • Conscience

Key Scripture:

“The spirit of man is the candle of the LORD…” — Proverbs 20:27

At Death:

The spirit returns to God who gave it (Ecclesiastes 12:7).
The righteous are immediately with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8).

5️⃣ Summary Comparison Table

PartFunctionAfter Death
BodyPhysical interactionReturns to dust
SoulMind, will, emotionsGoes to Heaven or Hades
SpiritGod-awarenessReturns to God; consciousness continues

6️⃣ The Spirit and Soul Are Not the Same

Many people confuse the two, but Scripture separates them:

“The Word of God divides between soul and spirit…” — Hebrews 4:12

Differences:

  • The spirit knows God.
  • The soul expresses personality.

Reflection Questions

  1. What is the difference between the spirit and the soul?
  2. Why does the body return to dust?
  3. Which part of man interacts with the spiritual world?
