1. The Gospel of the Kingdom vs the Gospel of Religion
1. What Is the Gospel?
The word gospel means “good news.”
In the time of kings and empires, a gospel was an announcement that a king had established rule or brought victory.
Jesus used this same language.
📖 Matthew 4:23 (KJV)
“And Jesus went about all Galilee… preaching the gospel of the kingdom…”
📖 Mark 1:14–15
“Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”
The good news Jesus announced was:
God’s Kingdom rule was being restored to mankind.
PART 1 — THE GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM
Definition
The Gospel of the Kingdom is the message that:
God the King is restoring His rule on earth through Jesus Christ and His redeemed people.
It is about government, authority, purpose, and restored relationship with the King.
Core Elements of the Kingdom Gospel
1. A King
The Kingdom message begins with a King.
📖 Psalm 103:19
“The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.”
Jesus came as the King sent from heaven.
📖 John 18:37
“Thou sayest that I am a king.”
2. A Kingdom
The Kingdom is God’s government and rulership.
📖 Luke 17:21
“The kingdom of God is within you.”
It is not merely a place, but God’s rule operating through people.
3. Citizens
Those who believe in Christ become citizens of the Kingdom.
📖 Philippians 3:20
“For our conversation (citizenship) is in heaven.”
4. Authority Restored
Man was created to govern the earth under God.
📖 Genesis 1:26
“Let them have dominion…”
Sin removed man from that position.
Christ came to restore that authority.
📖 Luke 10:19
“I give unto you power… over all the power of the enemy.”
5. Transformation of Life
The Kingdom message transforms how people live, think, speak, and govern life.
Jesus taught:
• Kingdom thinking
• Kingdom character
• Kingdom laws
• Kingdom purpose
The Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7) is a constitution of Kingdom living.
6. The Restoration of God’s Original Purpose
The Kingdom gospel restores the original purpose of creation.
📖 Revelation 5:10
“And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.”
God’s plan has always been:
Heaven’s government expressed on earth through His people.
PART 2 — THE GOSPEL OF RELIGION
The Gospel of Religion is not what Jesus preached.
It developed over time as human systems replaced the Kingdom message.
Religion focuses on man trying to reach God through rituals, institutions, and traditions.
Characteristics of Religious Gospel
1. Focus on Going to Heaven
Religion often reduces salvation to:
“Believe so you can go to heaven when you die.”
While eternal life is true, this is not the full message Jesus preached.
Jesus preached the Kingdom coming to earth.
📖 Matthew 6:10
“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven.”
2. Institutional Christianity
Religion focuses on:
• Denominations
• Buildings
• Programs
• Organizational identity
The Kingdom focuses on:
the King and His government operating through people.
3. External Rituals
Religion emphasizes:
• Ceremonies
• Traditions
• Religious performance
Jesus rebuked this system.
📖 Mark 7:7–8
“In vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.”
4. Passive Believers
Religion often teaches believers to simply:
• Attend church
• Avoid sin
• Wait for heaven
But the Kingdom message calls believers to:
• represent the King
• influence the world
• advance God’s rule
5. Separation from Daily Life
Religion separates faith from life.
Kingdom living integrates faith into:
• government
• business
• family
• education
• culture
PART 3 — Side-by-Side Comparison
| Gospel of the Kingdom | Gospel of Religion |
|---|---|
| Focus on the King | Focus on institutions |
| God’s government | Human traditions |
| Transformation of society | Personal religious activity |
| Authority and dominion | Passive spirituality |
| Kingdom citizens | Religious members |
| Restoring God’s rule on earth | Escaping earth to heaven |
PART 4 — What Jesus Actually Preached
Jesus consistently preached the Kingdom.
📖 Luke 4:43
“I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.”
📖 Matthew 24:14
“This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world…”
Notice:
The Bible does not say
“this gospel of religion.”
It says:
the gospel of the Kingdom.
PART 5 — Why This Matters for Believers Today
Understanding the Kingdom restores the believer’s identity.
Believers are not meant to be merely:
• church attenders
• religious followers
• spiritual spectators
They are meant to be:
• ambassadors of the King
• carriers of heaven’s culture
• representatives of God’s government
📖 2 Corinthians 5:20
“Now then we are ambassadors for Christ.”
An ambassador represents a government.
PART 6 — The Complete Gospel
The full gospel includes both:
- Salvation through Christ’s sacrifice
- Restoration into God’s Kingdom
Jesus died:
• to forgive sin
• to restore mankind to God
• to bring humanity back under God’s rule
📖 Colossians 1:13
“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.”
A Simple Teaching Summary
The Gospel of Religion says:
“Believe in Jesus so you can go to heaven.”
The Gospel of the Kingdom says:
“Through Jesus the King, God is restoring His rule in humanity and through humanity to the earth.”
Both include salvation — but the Kingdom message reveals the full purpose of salvation.
