3. Justification, Regeneration, Adoption

(Three Foundational Works of Salvation)

When a person repents and places faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, God performs several powerful spiritual works in that person’s life. Among the most important are:

  1. Justification
  2. Regeneration
  3. Adoption

These three describe what God does for a believer at the moment of salvation. Each one explains a different aspect of the believer’s new relationship with God.

1. Justification

(Our Legal Standing Before God)

What Justification Means

Justification means to be declared righteous before God.

It is a legal act of God in which He forgives the sinner and credits the righteousness of Christ to that person.

The believer is not justified because of personal goodness, but because of Christ’s sacrifice.

📖 Romans 5:1 (KJV)
“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

What Happens in Justification

In justification:

• the guilt of sin is removed
• the penalty of sin is cancelled
• Christ’s righteousness is credited to the believer

This means that before God’s court, the believer is declared righteous.

📖 2 Corinthians 5:21

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

Christ took our sin so that we could receive His righteousness.

Justification Is by Grace Through Faith

Justification cannot be earned through works.

📖 Romans 3:24

“Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.”

Good works follow salvation, but they do not produce justification.

The Result of Justification

Justification restores peace with God.

📖 Romans 5:9

“Being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”

The believer no longer stands under condemnation.

📖 Romans 8:1

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.”

2. Regeneration

(The New Birth — Our Inner Transformation)

What Regeneration Means

Regeneration means being spiritually reborn.

It is the work of the Holy Spirit that gives new spiritual life to the believer.

Jesus described this as being born again.

📖 John 3:3

“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

Why Regeneration Is Necessary

Human beings are spiritually dead because of sin.

📖 Ephesians 2:1

“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.”

Regeneration brings spiritual life where there was spiritual death.

How Regeneration Happens

Regeneration is produced by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God.

📖 Titus 3:5

“According to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.”

📖 1 Peter 1:23

“Being born again… by the word of God.”

What Regeneration Produces

When regeneration occurs:

• the heart is renewed
• spiritual understanding begins
• new desires for righteousness appear
• the Holy Spirit dwells within the believer

📖 2 Corinthians 5:17

“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.”

Regeneration changes the nature of the person.

3. Adoption

(Our New Position in God’s Family)

What Adoption Means

Adoption means that God receives the believer into His family as a son or daughter.

Through Christ, believers become children of God.

📖 John 1:12

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God.”

Adoption Gives a New Relationship with God

Before salvation, a person is separated from God.

Through adoption, believers gain:

• a Father in heaven
• a new spiritual family
• an inheritance in God’s Kingdom

📖 Romans 8:15

“Ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”

“Abba” expresses intimate relationship with God.

Adoption Gives an Inheritance

Believers are not only forgiven — they are heirs of God.

📖 Romans 8:17

“And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.”

This inheritance includes:

• eternal life
• fellowship with God
• participation in God’s Kingdom

4. How These Three Work Together

These three aspects of salvation occur together when a person is saved, but each explains a different dimension of salvation.

AspectMeaningWhat It Changes
JustificationDeclared righteousOur legal standing before God
RegenerationBorn againOur inner spiritual nature
AdoptionMade God’s childOur relationship with God

Another way to understand them:

Justification changes our status before God
Regeneration changes our heart
Adoption changes our family identity

5. A Simple Illustration

Before salvation a person is:

• guilty before God’s court
• spiritually dead
• outside God’s family

Through Christ:

Justification – the judge declares you righteous
Regeneration – your spirit is made alive
Adoption – you become God’s child

6. The Beauty of Salvation

Salvation is not a single small event.
It is a complete restoration of a person to God.

Through Christ:

• sins are forgiven
• the heart is renewed
• the believer enters God’s family
• eternal life begins

📖 Ephesians 1:5

“Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself.”

Summary

At salvation God performs three great works in the believer.

Justification – God declares the believer righteous.
Regeneration – the believer receives new spiritual life.
Adoption – the believer becomes a child of God.

Together these explain the fullness of what happens when a person is saved.
