The Finished Work of the Cross

(What Jesus Accomplished Through His Death)

One of the most powerful truths of the Gospel is the finished work of the cross. When Jesus Christ died on the cross, He did not begin the work of salvation—He completed it. His sacrifice fully accomplished what was necessary to reconcile humanity to God.

This truth is expressed in Jesus’ final words on the cross.

📖 John 19:30 (KJV)
“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished.”

The phrase “It is finished” comes from a Greek word meaning paid in full. Christ’s death completed the work required for redemption.

1. The Cross Solved the Problem of Sin

Sin is the fundamental problem that separates humanity from God.

📖 Romans 3:23
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”

Through His death, Jesus bore the penalty that sin required.

📖 Isaiah 53:5

“He was wounded for our transgressions… and with his stripes we are healed.”

The cross demonstrates both:

  • God’s justice toward sin
  • God’s love for humanity

2. The Cross Provided Forgiveness

Because Jesus paid the price for sin, forgiveness is now available to all who believe.

📖 Ephesians 1:7

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.”

Forgiveness is not earned by human effort; it is received through faith in Christ.

3. The Cross Brought Reconciliation With God

Sin created separation between humanity and God. The cross restored that relationship.

📖 Romans 5:10

“When we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son.”

Through Christ, believers are no longer enemies of God but are welcomed into fellowship with Him.

4. The Cross Defeated the Power of Sin

The cross not only forgives sin but also breaks its power over believers.

📖 Romans 6:6

“Our old man is crucified with him.”

This means that the believer’s old identity in sin has been judged through Christ’s death.

5. The Cross Defeated the Powers of Darkness

The New Testament teaches that Christ’s death also defeated the spiritual forces of evil.

📖 Colossians 2:15

“Having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly.”

Through the cross and resurrection, Christ triumphed over the kingdom of darkness.

6. The Cross Opened the Way to God

Before Christ’s sacrifice, access to God was limited under the Old Covenant.

When Jesus died, the veil of the temple was torn.

📖 Matthew 27:51

“The veil of the temple was rent in twain.”

This symbolized that through Christ, believers now have direct access to God.

📖 Hebrews 10:19

“Having therefore… boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus.”

7. The Cross Established the New Covenant

Jesus’ death inaugurated the New Covenant, a new relationship between God and humanity.

📖 Luke 22:20

“This cup is the new testament in my blood.”

Under the New Covenant, believers receive:

  • forgiveness of sins
  • a new heart
  • the indwelling Holy Spirit

8. The Cross Demonstrates God’s Love

The cross reveals the depth of God’s love for humanity.

📖 Romans 5:8

“God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Salvation is not something humanity achieved; it is a gift of divine grace.

9. The Cross Leads to Resurrection Life

The cross is not the end of the story. Jesus’ death leads to His resurrection.

The resurrection confirms that the work of the cross was accepted by God and that death has been defeated.

Because Christ lives, believers share in His new life.

Summary

The finished work of the cross means that Jesus fully accomplished everything necessary for salvation.

Through His death:

  • sin was judged
  • forgiveness was provided
  • humanity was reconciled to God
  • the power of sin and darkness was defeated
  • access to God was opened
  • the New Covenant was established

Nothing can be added to what Christ accomplished. Believers simply receive the benefits of the cross through faith in Jesus Christ.
