Marriage, Divorce, Remarriage & Biblical Boundaries

PART 1 — GOD’S ORIGINAL DESIGN FOR MARRIAGE
1. Marriage was designed by God, not culture
Genesis 2:24 (KJV)
“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.”
Key truths
- Marriage is one man + one woman
- It is meant to be lifelong
- It creates a one-flesh covenant, not just a legal contract
Jesus later confirms this design.
Matthew 19:6
“What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
➡️ God’s ideal is one marriage for life.
PART 2 — WHY DIVORCE EXISTS AT ALL
2. Divorce was never God’s desire — it was permitted because of sin
Matthew 19:8
“Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.”
Plain meaning
- Divorce exists because of human sin, not God’s plan
- God permits divorce in certain situations, but does not celebrate it
Malachi 2:16
“For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away.”
➡️ God hates divorce because it destroys covenant, wounds people, and harms children, not because He hates divorced people.
PART 3 — WHEN DOES THE BIBLE ALLOW DIVORCE?
Scripture gives limited, specific allowances, not broad permission.
3. Divorce because of sexual immorality
Matthew 19:9
“Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery.”
Important clarity
- Fornication here refers to sexual unfaithfulness that breaks the covenant
- Jesus does not command divorce — He permits it
- Forgiveness and restoration are still encouraged when repentance occurs
➡️ Sexual immorality breaks the covenant, making divorce allowable, not mandatory.
4. Divorce because of abandonment by an unbelieving spouse
1 Corinthians 7:15
“But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases.”
Plain meaning
- If an unbelieving spouse chooses to leave, the believer:
- Is not enslaved
- Is not sinning
- God does not force believers to remain trapped in abandonment
➡️ Abandonment breaks the marriage covenant.
PART 4 — REMARRIAGE: IS IT ALWAYS SIN?
5. Remarriage after unbiblical divorce
Jesus warns strongly:
Luke 16:18
“Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another, committeth adultery.”
Meaning
- Divorce for selfish, sinful reasons followed by remarriage is adultery
- This is because the original covenant was not biblically dissolved
6. Remarriage after biblical divorce
Scripture implies freedom to remarry when:
- Sexual immorality broke the covenant
- Abandonment occurred
- Death occurred
Romans 7:2–3
“The woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth… but if the husband be dead, she is loosed.”
1 Corinthians 7:39
“The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married.”
➡️ When the covenant is biblically ended, remarriage is permitted.
PART 5 — BELIEVER AND UNBELIEVER MARRIAGES
7. Should a believer marry an unbeliever?
2 Corinthians 6:14
“Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers.”
Plain explanation
- Marriage is a spiritual partnership
- Different faiths create:
- Conflict of values
- Conflicting priorities
- Spiritual tension
➡️ God warns believers not to enter these unions.
8. What if a believer is already married to an unbeliever?
Paul answers this clearly.
1 Corinthians 7:12–13
“If any brother hath a wife that believeth not, and she be pleased to dwell with him, let him not put her away.”
Key truths
- Becoming a Christian does not cancel your marriage
- The believer should:
- Stay
- Love
- Live godly
- The marriage is still valid
9. Why stay?
1 Corinthians 7:14
“For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife… else were your children unclean; but now are they holy.”
Meaning
- The believer brings:
- God’s influence
- Prayer covering
- Spiritual atmosphere
- Children are blessed by the believing parent
PART 6 — MIXED (INTERRACIAL) MARRIAGES
10. The Bible does NOT forbid interracial marriage
This is one of the most misunderstood issues.
Moses married a Cushite (African) woman.
Numbers 12:1
“Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married.”
God’s response?
- He judged Miriam, not Moses
- Miriam became leprous
➡️ God defended Moses’ interracial marriage.
11. What God forbids is NOT race — it is faith conflict
Deuteronomy 7:3–4
“Neither shalt thou make marriages with them… for they will turn away thy son from following me.”
The issue
- Not skin color
- Not nationality
- Spiritual allegiance
➡️ The Bible condemns spiritual compromise, not racial diversity.
12. In Christ, race is irrelevant
Galatians 3:28
“There is neither Jew nor Greek… for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Colossians 3:11
“Christ is all, and in all.”
➡️ Interracial Christian marriages are fully biblical.
PART 7 — GOD’S HEART FOR BROKEN PEOPLE
13. Divorce is not the unforgivable sin
Jesus spoke to:
- Divorced women
- Broken families
- Remarried people
He offered:
- Grace
- Restoration
- New beginnings
John 4:18 — the Samaritan woman had five husbands, yet Jesus still engaged her with mercy and truth.
14. God restores, but He also corrects
Psalm 147:3
“He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds.”
Isaiah 1:18
“Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.”
➡️ God forgives the past but calls us to walk rightly going forward.
