5. Eternal Life — Present Possession, Future Fulfillment
The Bible teaches that eternal life is both a present reality for believers and a future fulfillment that will reach its complete expression in the age to come. Many people think eternal life only begins after death, but Scripture reveals that it begins the moment a person is born again, while its fullness will be experienced when Christ returns and God’s Kingdom is fully manifested.
Understanding this truth helps believers see that eternal life is not merely endless existence, but a living relationship with God that begins now and continues forever.
1. What Eternal Life Is
Eternal life is more than living forever.
It is sharing in the life of God Himself.
Jesus defined eternal life in this way:
📖 John 17:3 (KJV)
“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
Eternal life therefore includes:
• knowing God personally
• fellowship with Christ
• participation in God’s Kingdom
• a life that continues forever
It is quality of life with God, not simply length of life.
2. Eternal Life as a Present Possession
The New Testament repeatedly teaches that believers already possess eternal life.
📖 John 5:24
“He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation.”
Notice the present tense:
“hath everlasting life.”
This means that eternal life begins at the moment of salvation.
The Moment Eternal Life Begins
When a person repents and believes in Christ:
• their sins are forgiven
• they are justified before God
• they are born again
• they receive eternal life
📖 1 John 5:11–12
“And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”
Therefore, eternal life is already given to believers.
How Eternal Life Is Experienced Now
Even though believers live in a fallen world, eternal life already manifests in several ways.
Fellowship with God
Believers can know God personally.
📖 1 John 1:3
“That ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.”
Spiritual Transformation
Eternal life changes the believer’s heart and nature.
📖 2 Corinthians 5:17
“If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.”
The Indwelling Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is the guarantee of eternal life.
📖 Ephesians 1:13–14
“Ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance.”
The Spirit is a down payment of the life to come.
3. Eternal Life as Future Fulfillment
While believers already possess eternal life, its full expression lies ahead.
The future fulfillment of eternal life includes:
• resurrection of the body
• complete freedom from sin
• perfect fellowship with God
• participation in the restored creation
The Resurrection of the Body
Eternal life will include a resurrected body.
📖 John 6:40
“I will raise him up at the last day.”
Believers will not remain as disembodied spirits; they will receive glorified bodies.
📖 1 Corinthians 15:52
“The dead shall be raised incorruptible.”
Freedom from Sin and Death
The future fulfillment of eternal life means the complete removal of sin and death.
📖 Revelation 21:4
“And there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying.”
The brokenness of this present world will be removed.
Living in God’s Kingdom Forever
Eternal life will reach its fullness in the eternal Kingdom of God.
📖 Revelation 22:5
“And they shall reign for ever and ever.”
Believers will live under the perfect rule of God.
4. The “Already and Not Yet” Nature of Eternal Life
The Bible presents eternal life with an “already and not yet” reality.
Already
Believers already have:
• forgiveness of sins
• new spiritual life
• the Holy Spirit
• fellowship with God
Not Yet
Believers still await:
• resurrection bodies
• the restoration of creation
• the complete defeat of evil
• the full Kingdom of God on earth
Thus eternal life has begun but is not yet fully revealed.
5. Why This Truth Is Important
Understanding eternal life correctly changes how believers live.
It removes fear of death
📖 John 11:25
“He that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.”
It gives purpose for present life
Believers are already participating in God’s Kingdom.
It produces hope for the future
📖 Titus 1:2
“In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.”
This hope anchors the believer’s life.
6. Eternal Life and the Kingdom of God
Eternal life is inseparable from the Kingdom of God.
The Kingdom is:
• the rule of God
• the realm where God’s life is expressed
Those who possess eternal life are citizens of that Kingdom.
📖 Colossians 1:13
“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.”
Summary
Eternal life has two dimensions.
Present Possession
Believers already have eternal life through faith in Christ.
Future Fulfillment
Eternal life will be fully realized when Christ returns and God restores creation.
Through Jesus Christ, eternal life begins now and continues forever.
