Lesson 1: Why Scripture Is the Final Authority

Lesson Purpose

This lesson establishes the non-negotiable foundation for all discernment: Scripture is the final, governing authority for faith, doctrine, guidance, and practice.

Many believers sincerely love God yet unknowingly allow:

experiences
emotions
testimonies
leaders
prophetic words

to function as equal to or greater than Scripture. This creates instability, doctrinal drift, and vulnerability to deception.

This lesson exists to:

restore Scripture to its rightful place
explain why experience must submit to truth
protect believers from experience-driven theology
establish confidence in the written Word
anchor all discernment moving forward

By the end of this lesson, the student will:

understand why Scripture is the final authority
distinguish authority from experience
recognize the dangers of elevating experience above Scripture
learn how Scripture governs all spiritual claims
commit to truth over sensation

Introduction: “But I Experienced This…”

One of the most common justifications for unbiblical beliefs is:

“I experienced it, so it must be true.”

Experience is powerful—but it is not authoritative.

Scripture never tells believers to interpret truth through experience.
Scripture tells believers to interpret experience through truth.

📖 Isaiah 8:20

“To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”

Section 1: What Authority Actually Means

Authority answers the question:

“What has the final say?”

In the Christian faith:

Scripture has authority
experience does not

📖 Matthew 4:4

“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

Jesus appealed to Scripture—not experience—even under spiritual pressure.

Section 2: Scripture Is God-Breathed and Complete

📖 2 Timothy 3:16–17

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God… that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”

Scripture is:

inspired
sufficient
authoritative
complete

Nothing needs to be added to make it effective.

Section 3: Experience Is Real — But Not Infallible

Experiences may be:

emotional
spiritual
psychological
circumstantial

They can come from:

God
human emotion
trauma
expectation
deception

“The heart is deceitful above all things…”

Scripture alone is immune to distortion.

Section 4: The Danger of Experience-Driven Theology

Experience-driven theology occurs when:

experience interprets Scripture
feelings determine doctrine
testimonies override truth

This leads to:

contradiction
confusion
doctrinal drift

Peter elevated Scripture above his own supernatural experience on the Mount of Transfiguration.

Section 5: Biblical Examples of Experience Being Tested

The Bereans

📖 Acts 17:11

“They searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”

They tested apostolic teaching—not just false teachers.

Paul’s Warning

📖 Galatians 1:8

“Though we, or an angel from heaven…”

Even supernatural experiences must be rejected if they contradict Scripture.

Section 6: Why Experience Feels So Convincing

Experience feels convincing because:

it is personal
it is emotional
it is memorable
it feels spiritual

But Scripture never asks:

“Did it feel real?”
It asks:
“Is it true?”

“Thy word is truth.”

Section 7: Scripture Interprets Experience — Not the Other Way Around

Correct order:

Scripture establishes truth
Experience is evaluated
Doctrine is protected

Wrong order:

Experience occurs
Meaning is assumed
Scripture is reinterpreted

Section 8: Why God Chose Scripture as Final Authority

God chose Scripture because:

it is public, not private
it is testable, not subjective
it is stable across generations
it protects believers equally

Experience varies.
Scripture does not.

Section 9: Scripture Protects Believers from Deception

“That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro…”

Without Scripture as final authority, believers become vulnerable to:

trends
personalities
movements
emotional waves

Section 10: The Holy Spirit and Scripture

The Holy Spirit:

inspired Scripture
illuminates Scripture
never contradicts Scripture

“He will guide you into all truth…”

The Spirit leads into truth already revealed, not beyond it.

Section 11: Humility Is Required to Submit Experience to Scripture

Submitting experience to Scripture requires humility.

📖 Proverbs 3:5

“Lean not unto thine own understanding…”

Spiritual maturity says:

“Even if it felt real, Scripture decides.”

Section 12: A Foundational Commitment

Every believer must settle this question:

What has the final authority in my life—Scripture or experience?

Without this decision, discernment is impossible.
