4. What It Means to Be “Born Again”

The phrase “born again” is one of the most important teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. It describes the spiritual transformation that occurs when a person enters the Kingdom of God through faith in Christ. Being born again is not a religious label; it is a divine work of God that gives a person new spiritual life.

1. The Origin of the Phrase “Born Again”

The expression comes directly from Jesus’ conversation with a Pharisee named Nicodemus.

📖 John 3:3 (KJV)
“Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

Nicodemus was a religious leader, yet Jesus told him that religious knowledge alone was not enough. A person must experience a spiritual rebirth.

2. Why the New Birth Is Necessary

The Bible teaches that humanity is spiritually separated from God because of sin.

📖 Ephesians 2:1
“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.”

Spiritual death means:

  • separation from God
  • inability to truly know God
  • a fallen nature inclined toward sin

Because of this condition, a person cannot enter God’s Kingdom merely through:

  • religion
  • moral effort
  • good works

A new spiritual life must be given.

3. What Happens When Someone Is Born Again

Being born again is the work of the Holy Spirit that gives a person a new spiritual nature.

📖 John 3:5–6

“Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”

When a person is born again:

1. The Spirit Is Made Alive

The human spirit, previously separated from God, is brought to life.

📖 Ephesians 2:5
“Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ.”

2. A New Nature Is Given

God produces an inner transformation.

📖 2 Corinthians 5:17

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.”

This does not mean instant perfection, but it means the beginning of a new life directed toward God.

3. The Holy Spirit Comes to Dwell Within

The believer becomes a dwelling place for God’s Spirit.

📖 Romans 8:9

“If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.”

The Spirit begins guiding, teaching, and transforming the believer.

4. How a Person Is Born Again

The new birth occurs when a person responds to the Gospel with repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

📖 John 1:12

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God.”

The process involves:

  1. Hearing the Gospel
  2. Being convicted by the Holy Spirit
  3. Repenting of sin
  4. Believing in Jesus Christ
  5. Receiving new spiritual life

5. What the New Birth Produces

Being born again begins a new relationship with God.

Several changes follow:

A New Relationship With God

God becomes Father.

📖 Romans 8:15
“Ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”

A New Direction for Life

The believer begins pursuing righteousness and obedience.

📖 1 John 2:29
“Every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.”

A New Love for God and Others

Spiritual life produces love.

📖 1 John 4:7

“Every one that loveth is born of God.”

6. What Being Born Again Is Not

Many misunderstand the new birth.

Being born again is not:

  • joining a church
  • adopting a religious identity
  • improving one’s moral behavior
  • performing religious rituals

It is a supernatural transformation produced by God.

7. The Kingdom Connection

Jesus connected the new birth directly to the Kingdom of God.

📖 John 3:3

“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

This means that the new birth is the entrance into God’s Kingdom. Through regeneration, a person becomes a citizen of God’s Kingdom and a child of God.

8. The Evidence of the New Birth

The Bible describes several signs that a person has been born again:

  • faith in Jesus Christ
  • a desire to obey God
  • love for fellow believers
  • conviction about sin
  • spiritual growth over time

These are not the cause of the new birth but the fruit of it.

Summary

To be born again means that God gives a person new spiritual life through the Holy Spirit when they repent and place faith in Jesus Christ.

Through the new birth:

  • sins are forgiven
  • the heart is renewed
  • the Holy Spirit indwells the believer
  • the person becomes a child of God
  • entrance into the Kingdom of God is granted

The new birth is the beginning of a transformed life with God.
