In Adam vs In Christ
(Two Spiritual Realms of Humanity)
The Bible reveals that all humanity exists in one of two spiritual positions:
- In Adam
- In Christ
These two positions represent two different spiritual realities, two different destinies, and two different relationships with God. Every person born into the world begins in Adam, but through faith in Jesus Christ a person can be transferred into Christ.
This truth is foundational to understanding salvation and the work of redemption.
1. Humanity “In Adam”
The first man, Adam, represents the entire human race in its fallen condition. When Adam sinned, the consequences affected all humanity.
📖 Romans 5:12 (KJV)
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”
Being “in Adam” means sharing in the fallen condition that resulted from Adam’s disobedience.
Characteristics of Being “In Adam”
1. A Fallen Nature
Humanity inherits a sinful nature.
📖 Psalm 51:5
“Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.”
This does not mean every person is as sinful as possible, but it means humanity has a nature inclined toward sin.
2. Separation from God
Sin broke the relationship between humanity and God.
📖 Isaiah 59:2
“Your iniquities have separated between you and your God.”
3. Spiritual Death
The consequence of sin is spiritual death.
📖 Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death.”
This includes:
- spiritual separation from God
- physical death
- eventual eternal judgment
4. Bondage to Sin
Those in Adam live under the power of sin.
📖 John 8:34
“Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.”
2. Christ — The Second Adam
Jesus Christ came as the second Adam or last Adam, representing a new humanity.
📖 1 Corinthians 15:45
“The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.”
Where Adam brought sin and death, Christ brings righteousness and life.
3. Humanity “In Christ”
When a person repents and believes in Jesus Christ, they are placed in Christ.
📖 2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature.”
This phrase appears many times in the New Testament and describes the believer’s new spiritual position.
What It Means to Be “In Christ”
1. Forgiveness of Sin
Those in Christ receive forgiveness.
📖 Ephesians 1:7
“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.”
2. Justification
Believers are declared righteous before God.
📖 Romans 5:18
“By the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.”
3. Spiritual Life
Christ brings new life to those who believe.
📖 John 10:10
“I am come that they might have life.”
4. A New Identity
Believers receive a new identity and relationship with God.
📖 Galatians 3:26
“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.”
4. The Transfer from Adam to Christ
Salvation is described as a transfer from one realm to another.
📖 Colossians 1:13
“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.”
This transfer occurs through:
• repentance
• faith in Christ
• the new birth
Through this process, a person moves from Adam’s fallen race into Christ’s redeemed family.
5. A Comparison: In Adam vs In Christ
| In Adam | In Christ |
|---|---|
| Sin | Righteousness |
| Death | Eternal Life |
| Condemnation | Justification |
| Separation from God | Reconciliation with God |
| Bondage to sin | Freedom in Christ |
| Old creation | New creation |
6. The Two Representatives of Humanity
The Bible presents Adam and Christ as two representatives of humanity.
Adam represents the old humanity.
Christ represents the new humanity.
📖 Romans 5:19
“For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.”
7. The Final Outcome
The ultimate destinies of these two positions are completely different.
In Adam
Those who remain in Adam remain under sin and judgment.
In Christ
Those who are in Christ receive eternal life and resurrection.
📖 1 Corinthians 15:22
“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”
