MODULE 2: Identity in Christ

Lesson Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will:

  • Clearly understand what the Gospel is—and what it is not
  • Be able to explain the Gospel biblically and simply
  • Understand why the Gospel is the foundation of salvation and Christian faith
  • Recognize the Gospel as God’s completed work, not human effort

Introduction: Why This Lesson Matters

Many people believe they know the Gospel, yet cannot clearly explain it. Others confuse the Gospel with church attendance, good behavior, religious traditions, or moral improvement. Some reduce it to a motivational message, while others treat it as a list of rules to follow.

The Gospel is not advice.
The Gospel is not religion.
The Gospel is not self-improvement.

The Gospel is good news—a divine announcement of what God has already done for humanity through Jesus Christ.

If the Gospel is misunderstood, everything built upon it becomes unstable. That is why this course begins here. The Gospel is the foundation upon which salvation, identity, assurance, faith, and Christian living all stand.

Section 1: The Meaning of the Word “Gospel”

The word Gospel comes from the Greek word euangelion, which means:

  • good news
  • glad tidings
  • a joyful announcement

In the ancient world, euangelion was used when a messenger brought news of a victory, a king’s coronation, or the end of a war. It was not advice about what people should do—it was a declaration of what had already happened.

📖 Romans 1:16

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth…”

The Gospel is not merely information—it carries power. It is God’s power released to bring salvation to those who believe.

Section 2: The Gospel Defined by Scripture

The clearest biblical definition of the Gospel is found here:

📖 1 Corinthians 15:1–4

“Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you…
How that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”

According to Scripture, the Gospel consists of three historical and spiritual truths:

  1. Christ died for our sins
  2. Christ was buried
  3. Christ rose again on the third day

This is not symbolic language. These are real events with eternal consequences.

Section 3: Why the Gospel Was Necessary

To understand the Gospel, we must understand the human problem it addresses.

The Condition of Humanity

📖 Romans 3:23

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”

Sin is not merely bad behavior—it is separation from God’s life, nature, and righteousness. Humanity was created for fellowship with God, but sin brought:

  • spiritual death
  • separation
  • guilt
  • corruption
  • loss of fellowship

📖 Romans 6:23

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Death here is not only physical—it is spiritual separation from God.

Section 4: God’s Response to Humanity’s Condition

The Gospel begins with God, not man.

📖 John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son…”

The Gospel is not about man seeking God—it is about God seeking man.

God did not send:

  • a law to save us
  • a philosophy to fix us
  • a religion to reform us

He sent His Son.

Section 5: The Cross — The Heart of the Gospel

Christ Died for Our Sins

📖 Isaiah 53:5

“But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities…”

📖 2 Corinthians 5:21

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

On the cross:

  • Jesus took our sin
  • Jesus bore our guilt
  • Jesus absorbed the judgment we deserved
  • Jesus satisfied divine justice

The Gospel declares that the penalty has already been paid.

Section 6: The Burial — Proof of a Finished Death

Jesus was buried to confirm that His death was real.

📖 Matthew 27:59–60

“And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
And laid it in his own new tomb…”

The burial shows that:

  • sin truly died in Christ
  • the old life was put away
  • the debt was settled

Section 7: The Resurrection — The Victory of the Gospel

📖 1 Corinthians 15:17

“And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.”

The resurrection proves:

  • sin is defeated
  • death is conquered
  • Christ is Lord
  • salvation is complete

📖 Romans 4:25

“Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.”

The resurrection is God’s declaration that the sacrifice was accepted.

Section 8: What the Gospel Is NOT

The Gospel is not:

  • trying harder to be good
  • keeping religious rules to earn favor
  • moral self-improvement
  • church membership
  • cultural Christianity

📖 Ephesians 2:8–9

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Salvation is not a reward—it is a gift.

Section 9: The Required Response to the Gospel

The Gospel must be believed, not worked for.

📖 Romans 10:9–10

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

Belief is not mental agreement—it is heart trust and reliance upon Christ alone.

Section 10: Why the Gospel Must Be the Foundation

Everything in the Christian life flows from the Gospel:

  • assurance of salvation
  • identity in Christ
  • freedom from condemnation
  • victory over sin
  • relationship with God

If the foundation is wrong, the structure will collapse.

📖 1 Corinthians 3:11

“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

Summary of Lesson 1

  • The Gospel is the good news of what God has done through Christ
  • Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and rose again
  • Salvation is by grace through faith—not works
  • The Gospel is the foundation of the Christian faith
