Authority of the Believer (Introductory)

(The Authority Christ Has Given to His People)

One of the foundational truths of the New Testament is that believers in Jesus Christ have been given spiritual authority. This authority does not originate from human ability or personal strength. It comes from the authority of Christ Himself, which He shares with those who belong to Him.

Understanding this truth helps believers move from spiritual weakness and fear into confidence in Christ and effective Kingdom living.

1. What Authority Means

Authority means the legal right to act, speak, or command within a delegated jurisdiction.

In Scripture, authority is closely connected with government and rulership. God is the ultimate King, and He delegates authority to those who serve His purposes.

When the Bible speaks of the believer’s authority, it refers to the authority Christ grants His followers to represent His Kingdom on the earth.

2. The Original Authority Given to Humanity

God originally gave humanity authority over the earth.

📖 Genesis 1:26 (KJV)
“Let them have dominion… over all the earth.”

Human beings were created to:

• represent God’s rule
• steward the earth
• exercise delegated authority under God

However, through sin, humanity lost the proper exercise of this authority.

3. Christ Restores Authority

Jesus Christ came not only to forgive sin but also to restore what humanity lost through the fall.

After His resurrection, Christ declared:

📖 Matthew 28:18

“All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”

Because Christ possesses all authority, He can delegate authority to His followers.

4. Authority Given to Believers

Jesus gave His followers authority to represent Him.

📖 Luke 10:19

“Behold, I give unto you power… over all the power of the enemy.”

This authority includes power to:

• resist the works of darkness
• proclaim the Gospel
• minister in Christ’s name
• represent the Kingdom of God

Believers operate under Christ’s authority, not their own.

5. Authority Through Union With Christ

Believers share in Christ’s authority because they are united with Him.

📖 Ephesians 2:6

“[God] hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”

This verse reveals a spiritual reality: believers are positioned with Christ, who reigns above all powers.

6. Authority and Submission to Christ

The believer’s authority is always exercised in submission to Christ.

Authority in the Kingdom of God is not about domination or personal power. It is about representing the will and purposes of the King.

Jesus Himself demonstrated this principle.

📖 John 5:19

“The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do.”

Believers exercise authority as they walk in obedience to Christ.

7. Areas Where Believers Exercise Authority

The authority of the believer operates in several areas of life.

Authority Over Sin

Believers are no longer slaves to sin.

📖 Romans 6:14

“Sin shall not have dominion over you.”

Through Christ, believers have the power to resist sinful patterns.

Authority Over the Enemy

Believers can stand against spiritual opposition.

📖 James 4:7

“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

This authority is exercised through faith, prayer, and obedience.

Authority in Ministry

Believers represent Christ in proclaiming the Gospel.

📖 Mark 16:15

“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

The authority of Christ empowers believers to carry out this mission.

8. Authority and Responsibility

With authority comes responsibility. Believers must exercise authority with:

• humility
• wisdom
• obedience to God
• dependence on the Holy Spirit

Authority is never for personal pride or control over others. It exists to serve God’s purposes and advance His Kingdom.

9. The Ultimate Purpose of the Believer’s Authority

The authority given to believers serves a larger purpose: the extension of God’s Kingdom on earth.

Believers represent the rule of God in their lives and in the world around them.

They proclaim the Gospel, resist evil, and demonstrate the life of Christ through their words and actions.

Summary

The authority of the believer is the delegated authority that Jesus Christ gives to His followers to represent His Kingdom on the earth.

This authority is rooted in:

• Christ’s victory over sin and death
• the believer’s union with Christ
• the indwelling Holy Spirit

When believers understand this truth, they begin to live with greater confidence, spiritual effectiveness, and faithfulness to God’s mission.
