Righteousness by Faith

(The Biblical Foundation of Justification and Salvation)

One of the central teachings of the Bible is the doctrine of righteousness by faith. This truth explains how sinful human beings can be made right with God. The Scriptures teach that righteousness before God is not achieved by human effort or religious works, but is received through faith in Jesus Christ.

1. What Righteousness Means

Righteousness refers to being right before God according to His perfect standard.

God is completely holy and righteous.

📖 Psalm 11:7 (KJV)
“For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness.”

To stand before God, a person must be perfectly righteous. However, because of sin, no human being possesses this righteousness naturally.

📖 Romans 3:10
“There is none righteous, no, not one.”

Humanity therefore cannot achieve righteousness through personal effort.

2. The Problem of Human Righteousness

Many people attempt to become righteous through:

• moral living
• religious rituals
• obedience to laws
• good works

However, Scripture teaches that human righteousness is insufficient before God.

📖 Isaiah 64:6

“All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.”

Even the best human efforts cannot remove sin or produce the righteousness God requires.

3. God’s Solution: Righteousness by Faith

Because humanity cannot achieve righteousness, God provides it as a gift through faith in Jesus Christ.

📖 Romans 3:22

“Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe.”

This means that righteousness is credited to the believer when they trust in Christ.

4. The Example of Abraham

The Bible illustrates righteousness by faith through the life of Abraham.

📖 Genesis 15:6

“And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.”

Abraham was declared righteous because he believed God, not because he had perfectly obeyed every command.

The apostle Paul the Apostle later used Abraham as the primary example of justification by faith.

📖 Romans 4:3

“Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.”

5. Christ — The Source of Righteousness

Righteousness by faith is possible because of the work of Jesus Christ.

Jesus lived a perfectly righteous life and then died as a sacrifice for sin.

📖 2 Corinthians 5:21

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”

This verse describes the great exchange:

• Christ takes our sin
• believers receive His righteousness

6. Imputed Righteousness

The righteousness believers receive is often called imputed righteousness.

To “impute” means to credit or account something to someone’s record.

When a person believes in Christ:

• their sins are forgiven
• Christ’s righteousness is credited to them

📖 Romans 4:5

“To him that worketh not, but believeth… his faith is counted for righteousness.”

Thus the believer stands before God as righteous because of Christ.

7. Faith vs Works

The Bible clearly contrasts faith and works as the basis of justification.

📖 Galatians 2:16

“A man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ.”

This does not mean that good works are unimportant. Rather:

• works do not produce salvation
• works flow from salvation

Good works are the fruit of righteousness, not the cause of it.

8. The Results of Righteousness by Faith

When a person receives righteousness by faith, several blessings follow.

Peace with God

📖 Romans 5:1

“Being justified by faith, we have peace with God.”

The hostility between God and humanity is removed.

Freedom from Condemnation

📖 Romans 8:1

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.”

The believer is no longer under judgment.

A New Standing Before God

The believer now approaches God with confidence.

📖 Hebrews 10:19

“Having therefore… boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus.”

9. Living Out Righteousness

Although righteousness is received by faith, believers are called to live righteously.

📖 Romans 6:13

“Yield yourselves unto God… as instruments of righteousness.”

The righteousness given by God begins to transform the believer’s life and character.

Summary

Righteousness by faith means that sinful people are declared righteous before God through faith in Jesus Christ.

Human effort cannot achieve this righteousness. It is a gift of God’s grace received through faith.

Through Christ:

• sins are forgiven
• righteousness is credited to the believer
• peace with God is restored
• a new life of obedience begins

This doctrine lies at the very heart of the Gospel.
