📘 MODULE 3 — Paradise, Tartarus & the Lake of Fire
Understanding Heaven’s Waiting Place, the Prison of Fallen Angels, and the Eternal Final Hell
Lesson 1 — Paradise: The Resting Place of the Righteous
1. What Is Paradise?
Paradise (Greek: παράδεισος — paradeisos) means:
- “A garden”

- “A walled protected garden”
- “A place of rest and joy”
Three Biblical Uses of Paradise
- Garden of Eden – Genesis 2–3
- Abraham’s Bosom (before Christ’s resurrection) – Luke 16:22
- Third Heaven (after Jesus’ resurrection) – 2 Corinthians 12:2–4
2. Paradise BEFORE the Resurrection of Christ
Located in the “heart of the earth”
(Luke 16:19–31, Matthew 12:40)
- Righteous souls went to Abraham’s Bosom
- Comfort, peace, safety
- Still separated from God’s throne
- Fully conscious
- Could see the wicked dead across a great gulf
Key Scriptures
- Luke 16:22 — Lazarus carried into Abraham’s bosom
- Luke 23:43 — “Today you will be with Me in Paradise”
- Ephesians 4:8–10 — Christ descended into lower parts of earth
3. Paradise AFTER the Resurrection of Christ
When Jesus rose, He emptied Paradise:
- The righteous were taken from the heart of the earth
- Paradise was relocated into the third heaven
Proof

Understanding the Afterlife: A Clear Guide to Paradise, Tartarus, and the Lake of Fire
Introduction: Charting the Unseen Realms
Welcome to this clear guide to the unseen realms of the afterlife. The goal of this document is to demystify three key locations in Christian eschatology—Paradise, Tartarus, and the Lake of Fire—by clearly explaining what they are, who goes there, and their unique purpose in the divine timeline.
——————————————————————————–
1. Paradise: The Resting Place of the Righteous
Paradise is a place of peace and rest for the righteous. The Greek word for Paradise, paradeisos, has several related meanings that paint a picture of its nature:
- “A garden”
- “A place of delight”
- “A walled protected garden”
- “A place of rest and joy”
The most crucial aspect of Paradise is that its location and function changed significantly after the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Before Christ’s Resurrection
Originally, Paradise was located in the “heart of the earth.” Also known as “Abraham’s Bosom” (Luke 16), it was a place of comfort and peace where the souls of the righteous dead awaited the coming of the Messiah. While they were fully conscious and at peace, they were still separate from the throne of God. From this place of comfort, they could see the wicked in their place of torment across a great, impassable gulf.
After Christ’s Resurrection
When Jesus rose from the dead, He “led captivity captive” (Ephesians 4:8), emptying the original Paradise in the heart of the earth. He relocated this realm of the righteous to the “third heaven,” bringing them into the presence of God.
Today, Paradise serves as a temporary waiting area in Heaven. It is where the spirits of believers who have passed away reside in the presence of the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8), joyfully awaiting the final resurrection of their bodies.
The primary role of Paradise today is to serve as a temporary and joyful dwelling place for believers in Heaven, in the direct presence of the Lord.
This resting place for the righteous stands in stark contrast to a specific prison designed for a very different group of beings.

2. Tartarus: The Prison of Fallen Angels
Tartarus, from the Greek Tartaroo, is best understood as a maximum-security prison. It is essential to grasp two critical facts about this place: it is a prison exclusively for certain fallen angels and is never used for humans.
The inhabitants of Tartarus are the specific group of angels who sinned with women before the great flood, as recorded in Genesis 6:1-4. Their sin was unique: they left their assigned domain to corrupt the human bloodline. For this transgression, they are “reserved in everlasting chains under darkness until judgment day” (Jude 6).
To avoid confusion with other afterlife locations, the following table clarifies the distinct differences between Tartarus and Hades.
| Feature | Hades | Tartarus |
| Who goes there? | Wicked humans | Certain fallen angels |
| Conditions | Fire, thirst, torment | Total darkness, chains |
| Purpose | Temporary holding | Long-term imprisonment |
| Future | Emptied, then destroyed | Held until final judgment |
Having examined these temporary holding places, we can now turn our attention to the final and permanent destination for the wicked.

3. The Lake of Fire: The Final and Eternal Hell
The Lake of Fire, known in Greek as Gehenna, is the final and eternal Hell. It is also referred to as the “Second Death” and “Eternal Fire.” It is crucial to understand that this is not Hades; rather, it is the permanent, final destination for all who are wicked.
According to Matthew 25:41, the Lake of Fire was originally “prepared for the devil and his angels.” God did not create it for humanity. Humans are sent there only as a consequence of rejecting God’s offer of salvation through Christ.
Key Characteristics
The nature of the Lake of Fire is one of unending separation from God and profound suffering.
- Eternal, Conscious Torment: The Bible describes it as a place of everlasting punishment, with no second chances, no annihilation of the soul, and no concept of purgatory.
- A Place of Utter Misery: It is characterized by descriptive terms that convey its horror: fire, darkness, weeping, deep regret, and complete isolation.
Its Final Inhabitants
At the end of time, a number of entities will be cast into the Lake of Fire forever. These include:
- Satan
- The Antichrist and the False Prophet
- All Fallen Angels
- All Demons
- All Unsaved People
- Death and Hades themselves, which are ultimately destroyed
These distinct places—Paradise, Tartarus, and the Lake of Fire—all fit into a specific chronological sequence.
——————————————————————————–
4. A Simple Timeline of the Afterlife
To connect these concepts, it is helpful to see how these destinations function across different periods of biblical history.
Before Christ’s Resurrection
- Righteous: Went to Paradise, located in the “heart of the earth.”
- Wicked: Went to Hades for torment.
- Fallen Angels (from Genesis 6): Imprisoned in Tartarus.
After Christ’s Resurrection
- Righteous: Go directly to Paradise/Heaven to be with the Lord.
- Wicked: Continue to go to Hades.
- Fallen Angels (from Genesis 6): Remain imprisoned in Tartarus.
After the Final Judgment
- Righteous: Dwell eternally in the New Heaven and New Earth.
- Wicked: Cast into the Lake of Fire.
- Satan & Demons: Cast into the Lake of Fire.
- Death & Hades: Are destroyed forever in the Lake of Fire.
Understanding what these places are and when they are occupied naturally leads to the question of why this knowledge is important for believers today.

5. Why This Doctrine Matters
A clear understanding of Paradise, Tartarus, and the Lake of Fire is not merely an academic exercise; it has profound practical implications for a believer’s faith and actions.
- Strengthens Evangelism: It highlights the reality of Hell and the urgent need for people to hear about salvation.
- Builds Urgency: It reinforces the truth that human souls are eternal and their final destination is of utmost importance.
- Protects Against False Doctrine: It provides a biblical defense against incorrect teachings such as purgatory, annihilation, soul sleep, or reincarnation.
- Exalts Christ: It magnifies the victory of Jesus, who conquered death, hell, and the grave to offer humanity a path to eternal life.

Conclusion: A Clearer Picture
By examining them closely, we can see that Paradise, Tartarus, and the Lake of Fire are distinct places with different inhabitants, purposes, and timelines. Paradise is the joyful temporary home of the righteous, Tartarus is a unique prison for specific fallen angels, and the Lake of Fire is the final, eternal destination of all evil. Having this clarity helps build a more complete and coherent understanding of foundational Christian beliefs about life, death, and eternity.
