MODULE 5 — THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD

Understanding the Two Resurrections, Resurrection Bodies, and God’s Eternal Plan for Humanity

Lesson 1 — What Is the Resurrection?

1. Definition of Resurrection

Resurrection is:

The supernatural act of God raising a person’s physical body from the dead in an immortal, incorruptible, eternal form.

Key Facts

  • Resurrection is not reincarnation
  • Resurrection is not soul survival
  • Resurrection is not ghost existence
  • Resurrection is bodily and physical, not just spiritual

Key Scriptures

  • John 5:28–29
  • 1 Corinthians 15:51–54
  • Daniel 12:2

Lesson 2 — Two Major Resurrections in Scripture

The Bible clearly teaches two major resurrections:

1. The First Resurrection — Resurrection of the Righteous

Includes:

  • Old Testament saints (Dan. 12:2)
  • New Testament believers (1 Thess. 4:16)
  • Tribulation martyrs (Rev. 20:4)
  • Saints raised at Christ’s resurrection (Matt. 27:52–53)

Scripture

“Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection…”
— Revelation 20:6

2. The Second Resurrection — Resurrection of the Wicked

Includes:

  • All who rejected God
  • All whose names are not in the Book of Life

Scripture

“The rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished.”
— Revelation 20:5

This resurrection leads to:

  • The Great White Throne Judgment
  • Eternal punishment in the Lake of Fire

Lesson 3 — The Order of the First Resurrection

Scripture gives a clear divine sequence.

1. Christ — The Firstfruits

1 Corinthians 15:20–23
Jesus is the first to rise immortal.

2. The Church — At the Rapture

1 Thessalonians 4:16–17

  • Dead in Christ rise first
  • Living believers are transformed
  • Both meet the Lord in the air

3. Tribulation Saints

Revelation 20:4–5
Raised at Christ’s Second Coming.

4. Old Testament Saints

Daniel 12:2
Likely raised at Christ’s return in glory.

Lesson 4 — Resurrection Bodies

Characteristics of the Glorified Body

According to 1 Corinthians 15:35–55:

1. Incorruptible

No aging, sickness, decay.

2. Immortal

Can never die again.

3. Glorious

Radiant with heavenly beauty.

4. Powerful

Unlimited energy, no weakness.

5. Spiritual

Not ghostly — a physical body powered by the Spirit.

6. Like Christ’s Resurrection Body

Philippians 3:21
1 John 3:2
Luke 24:39

Christ’s Body Could:

  • Eat food
  • Be touched
  • Pass through walls
  • Travel instantly
  • Shine with glory

So will ours.

Lesson 5 — Resurrection in the Old Testament

The doctrine is NOT new.
The Old Testament clearly taught resurrection.

Key Proofs

  • Daniel 12:2
  • Job 19:25–27
  • Psalm 17:15
  • Hosea 13:14
  • Ezekiel 37 (the Valley of Dry Bones)

Lesson 6 — Resurrection in the New Testament

1. Jesus taught resurrection

John 11:25
“I am the resurrection and the life…”

2. Paul preached resurrection

Acts 23:6
Acts 24:15
1 Corinthians 15 (entire chapter)

3. The Early Church centered on resurrection

Acts 4:2
They preached “Jesus and the resurrection.”

Lesson 7 — The Resurrection of Jesus Christ

The resurrection of Christ is the foundation of:

  • Christianity
  • Salvation
  • Eternal life
  • Justification
  • Hope
  • The believer’s resurrection

If Christ be not risen… your faith is in vain.
— 1 Corinthians 15:17

Reasons Christ’s Resurrection Is Central

  • Proves He is God
  • Conquers sin, death, and hell
  • Guarantees our resurrection
  • Confirms the truth of Scripture
  • Secures eternal life
  • Establishes our victory

Lesson 8 — The Resurrection at the Rapture

1 Thessalonians 4:16–17

Sequence:

  1. The Lord descends
  2. Trumpet sounds
  3. Dead believers rise
  4. Living believers are transformed
  5. We meet the Lord in the air
  6. We enter heaven together

This is a resurrection event for the entire Church Age.

Lesson 9 — The Resurrection of the Wicked

Revelation 20:11–15

Purpose:

  • To stand before God
  • To receive judgment
  • To face eternal punishment

Characteristics:

  • Bodies suited for eternal punishment
  • Conscious, everlasting torment
  • No escape

This is the Second Death.

Lesson 10 — Why the Doctrine of Resurrection Matters

1. It proves the authenticity of the Bible

Only Christianity teaches a literal, bodily resurrection.

2. It guarantees justice

No crime, sin, or wickedness will go unpunished.

3. It provides hope for the believer

Death is not the end.

4. It reveals God’s plan for eternal life

A bodily life on a new earth.

5. It strengthens faith

We are not living for this world.
